The CPPIB Case Study

The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) is responsible for investing pension funds on behalf of 17 million Canadians. CPPIB engaged our services in April 2009 to transform the Enterprise Data Management (EDM, also called MDM) group into an Agile community.

Gil Broza carried out the Do Agile program between April and June 2009. It consisted of an Agile Readiness Assessment, a 2-day Pragmatic Scrum course, project kick-off including Agile chartering, and daily coaching of the project community (~25 people). He followed up with the Be Agile program between July and October.

Nahir Khan, a Waterloo University co-op student working with EDM during that time, wrote a case study about EDM's Agile adoption, four months after it started. Read it here.

The EDM community did in fact address most of the pain points in the study. Between August and October they resolved the matters of insufficient high-level design, defect handling process, and significantly increased pairing across the entire group.
